Notably, the American sports car was usually without luxury features and the luxury car without sport features.
Foreign makes mixed these features. This resulted in a dichotomy of buyers: total luxury or total economy. The Grand Am had two separate three-year runs in the s: from toand again from to It was based on the GM A platform.
Pontiac Grand Am
Production of the Grand Am was canceled in when it was replaced by the Pontiac The Grand Am was reintroduced in when it replaced the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am. The original Grand Am was introduced in the fall of as a model.
The GM A-body platform had major design revisions in that included the elimination of pillarless hardtops due to proposed Federal rollover standards, but with frameless windows similar to that of a hardtop. No convertibles were produced due to the rollover standards that never were enacted. All engines were available with a Turbo-hydramatic automatic transmission as standard equipment.
The Pontiac Grand Am style had a unique flexible urethane front fascia center nose known as the 'Endura' nose that was squeezable and could return to its original shape following a minor collision along with the new energy-absorbing bumpers, a total of six grille openings with vertical bars, round front turn signals with a cross-hair design, horizontal rear tail lights, and chrome rear bumper.
Additionally, Grand Ams featured a Radial Tuned Suspension RTS as standard equipment that included radial-ply tires, Pliacell shock absorbers, and front and rear sway bars.
The springs were advertised as being computer selected. Also included were an instrument panel from the Pontiac Grand Prix featuring a Rally gauge cluster with fuel, oil, water and volt gauges a tachometer or fuel economy gauge was optional, and on cars so equipped, the clock was moved to a space on the lower instrument panel under the radiothree-spoke padded steering wheel with brushed-stainless spokes, and Genuine Crossfire African Mahogany trim on the dash facing, radio and clock surrounds, as well as the center console between the front seats.
Pontiac also produced a single Grand Am station wagon as a feasibility study. This was a LeMans wagon converted to a Grand Am. A functional ram-air induction system was developed for the Pontiac A-bodies utilizing twin NACA openings in the hood, but the option was dropped due to inability to pass federally mandated drive-by noise standards. A few functional Ram Air systems were sold over the counter. Described as "The mid-sized Pontiac with Foreign Intrigue American Ingenuity" on the front cover of the four-page Grand Am brochure that featured a green four-door sedan, only minor styling changes highlighted this year's model including a redesigned nose and grille with 12 openings with horizontal bars.
Engine and transmission offerings were the same asbut four-speed manual transmissions were no longer offered in California, where only the Turbo Hydra-matic automatic was available. Inside, the genuine African crossfire mahogany trim on the instrument panel was replaced by a simulated material due to delamination problems on the models but the real wood was continued on the center console, optional console clock, and radio bezel.
Sales were down more than 50 percent due to the oil crisisand while the recession continued, prices increased for all model cars. Only 17, Grand Ams were built.
The Grand Am looked the same as the model, but had vertical front grille bars, a body-colored rear bumper, and a catalytic converter single-exhaust, which mandated the use of unleaded fuel, along with GM's High Energy Ignition and other items promoted as part of Pontiac's maximum mileage system. Inside, the Strato bucket seats received revised vertical trim patterns, the adjustable lumbar support controls were dropped, and only the passenger seat had a recliner, a "safety practice" which would continue at GM for a decade.
Engines were also detuned to meet the emission regulations with the compression ratio dropping to a new low of 7. Turbo Hydra-matic was standard equipment and the only transmission offered this year. Performance from was 7. A total of 10, Grand Ams were built in and the series was dropped after this year due to declining sales and rising gas prices as a result of the oil crisis. Also a factor leading to the Grand Am's cancellation, were plans for all Pontiac A-body cars receiving the newly approved rectangular headlights, which would necessitate a complete redesign of the Grand Am's Endura nose and Pontiac officials decided that the expense of such a redesign could not be justified based on low production numbers.
The basic GM A-body design remained until It was offered in both two- and four-door models featuring a vertical bar grille and other trimmings to differentiate it from the LeMans, upon which it was based. Like the models, this generation of Grand Ams also featured standard radial tires plus an upgraded Radial Tuned Suspension with front and rear sway bars.
New for was a four-speed manual available with the horsepower four-barrel in 49 states. The wood-grained instrument panel was replaced by brushed aluminum trim, while the gauge faces changed from silver with black letters and numbers to black with white letters and numbers. The year was the finale for the second-generation Grand Am.The Grand Prix is a line of automobiles produced by the Pontiac Division of General Motors from through for coupes and — for sedans.
First introduced as part of Pontiac's full-size car model offering for the model year, the marque varied repeatedly in size, luxury, and performance during its lifespan.
Among the changes were positioning in the personal luxury car market segment and mid-size car offering from the 2nd generation to the 5th generation for the sedan and from the 2nd generation to the 6th generation from the coupe; it returned to a full-size car from the 6th generation to the 7th generation for the sedan, positioned below the larger Bonneville in Pontiac's model lineup.
The Grand Prix first appeared in the Pontiac line for the model year, as a performance-oriented replacement for the Ventura which became a luxury trim level of the full-size Catalina It was essentially a standard Catalina coupe with minimal outside chrome trim and a sportier interior bucket seats and a center console. Early models were available with Pontiac performance options, including the factory-race Super Duty powertrain installed in a handful of and cars.
The first Grand Prix was a Catalina hardtop coupe trimmed to standards similar to the larger top-line Bonneville, with a distinctive grille and taillights. The bucket seats were upholstered in Morrokide vinyl, while nylon loop-blend carpeting covered the floor and lower door panels. The center console-mounted transmission shifter included a storage compartment and a tachometer. The rear bench seat included a center fold-down armrest and a speaker grille that could be made functional with the extra-cost Bi-Phonic rear speaker.
Included were a padded instrument panel, deluxe steering wheel, courtesy lights, and other features. Forthe Grand Prix received revised sheetmetal shared with other full-size Pontiacs, but with its own squared-off roofline with a concave rear window that contrasted with the convertible-like roofline of the Grand Prix and continued on the to Catalina and Bonneville.
Also new was a Pontiac-trademark split grille with vertical headlights and round parking lights and "hidden" taillights. Aside from grillework, taillight covering and bumpers, chrome trim was limited to lower rocker panels, wheel arches and roofline.
Inside, the GP continued with luxurious interiors featuring real walnut trim on the instrument panel and bucket seats upholstered in Morrokide vinyl.
Pontiac Grand Prix
The center console was now built into the instrument panel and featured a vacuum gauge to go along with a dash mounted tachometer manual transmission. Pedals received revised custom trim plates. A wide assortment of options were available including power steering, brakes, windows and driver's seat; air conditioning, eight-lug aluminum wheels with integrated brake drums, Safe-T-Track differential and other items.
The same selection of transmissions continued including the standard three-speed manual, optional four-speed manual, or three-speed Roto Hydra-matic. The Grand Prix received minor appearance changes from the edition.
Revised upholstery trims highlighted the interior, still featuring expanded Morrokide vinyl bucket seats and console as standard equipment. The standard three-speed manual and optional Hydra-matic transmissions were unchanged fromhowever, a new GM-built Muncie four-speed available in either a wide-ratio M or close-ratio M options replaced the Borg-Warner T While other Pontiac coupes received the semi-fastback rooflines shared with other GM divisions, Grand Prixs retained the exclusive squared-off roofline with concave rear window but a bit more rounded than the version.
Interiors were revised with all-new instrument panels featuring a larger dose of walnut trim which now extended to the center console standard with bucket seats, along with a new steering wheel with horn bars replacing the horn ring used in previous years.
The standard bucket seats could be upholstered either in expanded Morrokide vinyl or a new cloth-and-Morrokide trim. New for was a no-cost bench seat option with center armrest available with either upholstery choice. New options included an automatic air conditioning system. This system, first introduced by Cadillac inwas available in addition to the regular Circ-L-Aire Conditioning. Hazard flashers were also optional.
Engine offerings were revised for The standard three-speed and optional four-speed manual transmissions were carried over fromhowever, a new three-speed Turbo Hydra-matic transmission with torque-converter that was similar in principle to Ford's Cruise-O-Matic and Chrysler's Torqueflite replaced the older three-speed fluid coupling Roto Hydra-matic along with the four-speed Super Hydra-matic in Bonneville and Star Chief models.Last year's redesign enhanced the Navigator's already impressive capability to carry people and tow heavy loads.
It also ushered in fresh styling and new features. This new Lincoln is at the head of the class against its American counterparts and likely earns front-row status with valet attendants, too. We think the Navigator wears Lincoln's new design language well. Under the hood is an impressive turbocharged 3.
All that massive power gets to the ground via a speed automatic transmission. And while 10 speeds may seem like overkill, you'll hardly notice the shifting, and the additional gearing helps improve both acceleration and fuel economy. Inside, the Navigator uses top-notch materials on every panel. There are three rows of adult-size seating, a massive amount of cargo space, and modern tech behind the prominent infotainment screen. About the only downside is the care required in driving in crowded urban areas, but that's hardly a unique con for a full-size SUV.
Overall, we think Lincoln's Navigator is one of the nicest — and certainly the most surprising — luxury SUVs on the market for All trims are powered by a turbocharged 3. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive is optional for the first two trims.
The base Navigator trim level uses the standard wheelbase only. The Select, Reserve and Black Label trims are all available in the extended-wheelbase Navigator L that has additional cargo space. Also included is a configurable gauge cluster display, inch touchscreen display with the Sync 3 interface, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, six USB ports throughout the cabin, navigation, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a speaker surround-sound system.
The Select adds inch wheels, adaptive suspension dampers, power-folding running boards, upgraded leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a surround-view parking camera system, and a wireless charging pad for personal devices.
Just a bit further up the ladder is the Reserve trim that adds a panoramic sunroof and upgraded front seats with ventilation. You also get the Technology package optional on the Select that includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic braking, a head-up display, lane keeping assist, an automated parking system and automatic high beams.
The Black Label Navigator adds the above options as standard plus additional chrome exterior trim, upgraded leather upholstery and a speaker stereo system. ForLincoln's way multicontour front seats are standard equipment. Some of the upper trim level items are available as stand-alone or packaged options on the lower trim levels. Other notable options include a rear-seat entertainment system, with dual headrest-mounted displays and wireless headphones, and power-folding and heated second-row seats.
The seats are so amazingly comfortable, I feel like we all have more room even though I went from extended version of Cadillac to the smaller sized navigator and the technology is amazing! It drives so smooth and has so many wonderful features! Lincoln told the dealership to put oil in the car and give it back to me!!!

In the red corner, United with seven Premier League wins out of seven at home. In the blue, City with seven wins out of seven on the road. United are now on a 40-match unbeaten run at Old Trafford in all competitions while City are homing in on a new record after 13 straight league wins.
Something's got to give. United won their European fixture, 2-1 against CSKA Moscow, and head into Sunday full of confidence - but without Paul Pogba.
Just when little chinks of light were appearing in the form of wins over West Ham, Huddersfield and Limassol along come the rampant Reds. Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ran riot in midweek, sharing the goals between them against the Russians. After backing a 2-0 win for Everton against Huddersfield last weekend, we're going the same score for Palace to beat the Cherries.

Chelsea check on Bayer Leverkusen ace Leon Bailey as.What a great country. My husband, a friend and I recently completed the "Express Iceland" self-drive tour and had an unbelievable time. Working with Nordic Visitor exceeded all of our expectations. I wish Nordic Visitor serviced the entire globe. In other words, it's everything you need and more to ensure you have fun and peace of mind when traveling this beautiful and rugged country.
It's great value for the money spent. They handled our special requests (adding an extra day and changing our party size) promptly and happily. We did our own independent research yet it overlapped with most of what Nordic Visitor gave us. We were all impressed with the quality and quantity of information that we received once we booked the self-drive package.
Yet we were blown away by the packets of info we received when we arrived. Nordic Visitor provided a printed copy of the day-by-day itinerary and the site highlights book they had emailed us. They had a voucher for all of our package features (rental car, accommodations, airport transfer) so all we did at each location was hand them a voucher - so easy. The cell phone had Nordic Visitor saved in the contacts. The GPS had the key sites and some of the hotels already loaded. The road map of Iceland was color coded and the location of each accommodation was circled with the name and date of check-in written in.
There was a book with details of every city and site with driving info. They thought of every detail so we d chengelh34, United States Express Iceland, May 2013 A great self-drive circle of Iceland with Nordic Visitor. We would highly recommend the self-drive trip around the Ring Road as arranged by Nordic Visitor.
The country is spectacular!. It was easy for us because all the accommodations were arranged and were great. There was a detailed itinerary and information, back-up systems if needed, and quick and thorough service from Hilmar in the office.
I would love to have taken 2 weeks instead of one to really absorb the country but what we experienced in beauty, natural phenomenon, and nice people made for a terrific vacation. I have enough history and geology to think about to last for a long time. From the moment of booking to our return flight NV and Alexandra made the whole trip a once in a lifetime experience.
Even the weather was perfect although I'm not sure they had anything to do about that. The booking process was simple and clearly explained everything we were booking and the extra options available. Our hotel preferences were almost perfectly met and the one choice we couldn't get in (Ranga) was substituted with Hotel Anna, which was the gem of all the lovely hotels we stayed in. Alexandra worked so hard to meet our requests and got upgrades where possible, adding welcome luxury to our tour.
The standard sights (Reykjavik, Gulfoss, Geysir, Blue Lagoon) have to be done - all are very memorable. What really stood out though were the days we toured the south of the island. Walking behind a waterfall at Skogafoss, driving through incredible ever-changing landscapes with glaciers within touching distance, black beaches and whale-watching at Vik, snowmobiling on a volcano, glacier-walking, Watching seals swim in beautiful Jokulsalon in the middle of a blizzard and an hour later climbing a waterfall in warm sunshine.
A truly unbelievable place.
